INVITATION

We are pleased to announce the HTLV European Research Network (HERN) conference, which will be held in Madrid, Spain on the fall of 2023.

Members of the local committee will strive to ensure that this meeting provides ample opportunity for the participants to benefit from a rich environment of scientific interaction and to present their most recent research in the field of HTLV-I, a neglected infection that paradoxically produces life-threatening illnesses and affects more than 15 million people worldwide. Topics to be covered during the meeting will include epidemiology, virology, molecular biology, diagnosis, immunology, clinical manifestations, antiviral therapy and public health. The treatment of HTLV-1-associated diseases, namely adult T cell leukemia lymphoma (ATL) and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1 associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM) will also be addressed.

This year’s meeting will be hosted at the ICOMEM (Ilustre Colegio Oficial de Médicos de Madrid). During your visit to Spain, you will benefit from combining exciting science with cultural, historical, culinary and touristic activities. We look forward to welcoming you in Madrid, a city with unique geographical location in the center of Spain, with close proximity to stunning historical places, such as El Escorial (XVI century), Avila, Toledo, and Segovia. Madrid is a modern, lively city with a rich patrimony, including large museums such as El Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia.

It is my honor to serve as the host for the 2023 year’s conference. I will endeavor to ensure a successful and memorable event.

Sincerely yours,

Carmen de Mendoza & Vicente Soriano

ABOUT HERN

The HTLV European Research Network (HERN) was born in 1993 as a European Community funded Concerted Action to facilitate collaboration between researchers in the EU working on all aspects of Human T-lymphotropic Virus infection from molecular virology to clinical trials. The first meeting in London reviewed serological diagnosis and seroepidemiology. The subsequent HERN International Antenatal Study (HERNIAS) established a uniform baseline on HTLV-1/2 seroprevalence in Western Europe.

The appetite for a European HTLV Research platform was not diminished at the conclusion of EU support in 2002 since when HERN has continued to function as an informal, self-funded, network with biennial meetings organized by a local volunteer or committee. The objectives of HERN remain unchanged and meetings are open to all persons working on HTLV and related infections in the EU. The emphasis is on participation and the workshop style of short presentations and generous time for discussion distinguishes HERN from other meetings. The first participation of persons living with HTLV at the Rome meeting is now an important component of HERN which we look to extend. Overall participation has grown from 37 at the last EU funded meeting to one hundred in Beirut.
